The Presidents of the United States of America (Self-Titled) album cover

As someone who is perpetually many years behind the times in most cultural aspects, and someone who isn’t a frequent pop listener - I find myself diving into pop infrequently at odd angles, this album being no exception with its carefree, “having-fun-in-the-moment” attitude, fatalistically self-aware of their own shortcomings (see We Are Not Going to Make It). Its a total barrel of fun that could only have been made in the innocent times that were the mid-to-late-90s, and despite being someone who wasn’t alive for its release - it still gives me a bizarre nostalgic tang, back to a time where you could take life less seriously, with this album being a perfect outlet with its straightforwardly goofy comedy wrapped in tight, simple songs no longer than 3 minutes. The humour should, by all logic, wear thin and the albums grow stale in its 37-minute runtime, but against all odds, it simply doesn’t. And truthfully, I am glad for that fact.

Best tracks: Kitty, Lump, Boll Weevil, Peaches, We Are Not Going to Make It, Kick Out the Jams, Back Porch, Candy
