Bastion is a neat little game that outlines Supergiant’s rather humble origins, featuring a rather simple hack-n-slash (with similarly light RPG elements with weapon upgrades) all within a visually distinct isometric grid. However, I found that despite its visual charm, the core hack-n-slash gameplay was very barebones (blocking is far too good), the constant narrow path level design constantly forcing blocks (and said narrow path making it unreasonably difficult not to actually fall off navigating the isometric grid like a chump), and the “make-or-break” narration - which promises to tell a rather simple story quite well (and more importantly, outline a tale without having the budget or resources to show the grand world clearly envisioned) and is initially an inspired choice, however it all-too-quickly devolves into repeated “generic tough guy action lines”. It definitely had its time and place back in 2011, but playing it now, all these years later only shows how far both Supergiant, Indie Games in general, but also expectation of games have changed rather rapidly over the years - and without the nostalgia goggles this is nothing but rather mediocre.
