A pure and visually striking puzzle game with its minimalist aesthetic, complete with a surreal atmosphere and a non-Euclidean puzzle space - the game is quick to demonstrate its non-linearity, the need to start thinking out of the box, and that the surrounding environment can change on a whim all designed to disorient you.
The “introductory” section of the game really is fantastic, exploring the bizarre, empty world - wandering into the dreamlike unknown, and I still remembered the introductory rooms from all the way back from 2015 (?!) when had initially tried this. I had initially chalked this up to just being “dumb”, but even after a revisit all the problems I couldn’t put into words back then were as quickly revealed to me once again.
The main problem to me was the introduction of the various guns and largely turning the game into “block-puzzle” simulator, which was far less interesting and engaging (the inconsistent handling of said block placements did not help), and the initially interesting non-linearity and non-Euclidean design quickly turns itself into frustration, turning the mere concept of revisiting puzzles into a puzzle itself at times. The games opaqueness quickly turns into a detriment if you can’t grasp whether or not a given puzzle is solvable - and time spent attempting an “un-solvable” puzzle is no fun experience.
(As a side note, doing some quick research did enlighten me that I was missing some important cues with regards to the map and areas demonstrating what guns would be necessary - which is simultaneously a relief but also frustrating that I didn’t pick up on it -> I still have a sense of yearning to finally beat the game yet know I won’t have the true patience for it.)
